Arch support:
The word “arch” comes from the Greek archos: its basic meaning is associated with chief, head, king or origin in one way or another. You find it in words from archbishop to archenemy. So it makes sense that the arch is perhaps the most important structural feature of our feet, which bear 200,000 to 300,000 lbs. of stress each mile we walk. Arches absorb the brunt of the pressure our bodies thrust upon our feet with each stride. Weak arches can lead to a variety of musculoskeletal problems that can lead to inactivity and even disability.
When standing and walking it makes sense to take care of the arch, build strength in the supporting muscles and give it some support. Using a rolled up piece of yoga mat for standing poses is one way to bring awareness to the arch and build strength and tone. It is especially useful in poses like Triangle and Warrior Poses where the arch of the back leg may collapse.
